It's horrible and brutal. I did it one time 35 years ago. If you could have seen my poor cats paws after it was done, you would never consider it. Not to mention that the cat is NEVER able to defend itself again. Even if the cat is inside all the time, it only takes once for it to sneak out the door. Get it a scratching post.

Declawing cats is a very controversial topic. In order to remove the nail, the entire last joint of each toe is removed. Please keep in mind that this is a very intensive surgery and will require several weeks of healing. We perform this surgery using a multi-modal pain medication approach to help make sure the kitty is not in discomfort during or after surgery. We also use cautery to help decrease pain, bleeding, and swelling. Depending on the cat's age, they would need to stay 1-2 nights in the hospital for monitoring and bandage changes. There are other non-surgical options such as using Kitty Caps and Soft Paws. When applied regularly, many cats learn to tolerate them well. You can also use catnip-infused scratch posts to help train them to only scratch in certain areas. Please let us know if you have any additional questions. Dr. Nichole L. Zellner

No. It's the equivalent of cutting off a human's finger down to their first knuckle. It is painful and inhumane.

No. Try to modify the behavior. Use a spritz bottle and spritz the cat anytime she's clawing where she's not supposed to. Provide a couple different types of cat scratchers: try a cardboard one, a carpeted one, and there's one that's lined with rope.
