Sell your tank on craigslist, offer up or Ebay. HD doesn't buy used anything.

The Home Depot doesn’t buy empty propane tanks, but you can drop it off for safe disposal, just let an employee know. You can also bring in the empty tank and pay about $20 to exchange it for a full tank.
