Hi Jarred. That is EECO (Ecosystem Exploration Craft & Observatory) and it will crown our forthcoming Science Learning Campus. We are building themed exhibits around EECO that will teach people about our living planet. You can read more about it at thelivingplanet.com/eeco.
I looked up the news on it and it says it's the old u2's stage from the 360°tour that the planetarium will be using for more attractions, such as science.
It's a research facility.
