There are stories about it being haunted. And there is a history of death at the lighthouse and war in St. Augustine so there are hunted tours you can take.
What I can tell you for sure is that we are a historic site. Construction began just after the Civil War in 1871 - 1874. Three children died, two daughters of Hezekiah Pittee, US Superintendent of Lighthouse Construction, and an African American girl, during the tower's construction. Keeper William Harn passed away in 1889 of TB probably contracted in the Civil War. Decades later, Lula Rasmussen, a keeper's wife, passed away in the home. Many visitors and even the TV show Ghost Hunters, who have documented odd feelings, strange chills, the smell of cigar smoke, or sightings and orbs. Please visit and see for yourself! We can't promise anything, but who knows? www.staugustinelighthouse.org. Check out our daily discounts too.
