There are first come first serve sites available. For sure get there early though. Like 6am to get one of the earlier spots. We got there at 6:15ish on June 29th and we were the 5th car there. They came around 7am and gave available spots to the first 4. Then we waited around 20 minutes for the next batch of campsites.
We just stayed in Many Glacier and there were newcomers as early as 7:30am looking for spots and once we have the verbal okay that we were definitely vacating our campsite, another camper had claimed our spot and waited for us to pack up our tent campsite. We felt rushed to leave that morning because of the demand. There were 4 other cars in line behind the barricade that were waiting for the park ranger to assign them a spot if it became open. I suggest arriving to the barricade as early as 7:00am to snatch up a spot and be prepared to wait in your car for an open space. I overall suggest reserving a space in advance, if at all possible! Good luck and have fun!
Half of the sites are reservation based and the other half are first come first serve based on availability. Just get there early. The campsite hosts start pulling down the receipts for the sites that are vacating that day early in the morning, then once the current campers vacate sites are ready for reserving for that night up to the maximum of I believe ten nights, but my wife says it was fourteen. She is usually right.
