I went today and was so horrible small shattered shells everywhere the sand was so uncomfortable

It's ok I would recommend waiding in the surf with a wire mesh basket and use a small shovel and dig them up. Most of the shells I've found on the shore were broken.
Not so great
You'll have to look at the less visited spots to succeed.
Not worth going there for shelling alone.
