The lifeguards are on duty til 4 or 5. The most dangerous spot, facing the ocean from the lifeguard station, is just ahead and to the right of the station itself - there tends to be a lot of undertow there. This summer I had to help someone pull her daughter out of that area at around 6 PM, as her daughter was not a strong swimmer. A week or two later, a lifeguard warned me and my son about it, because that part didn't have many people and we like to bodyboard. I didn't want the lifeguard to get nervous so we told him we knew but that we'd move over. I have even seen them put out no swimming markers spanning that area - it's about 30 or 40 yards wide.
Yes, I am from Arkansas. My daughter and I drove there for our summer vacation at the end of June. There is a life guard on duty. Pay attention to the flags for tide warnings. After I left Florida I heard there was a bacteria in the water. I do not have a clue if that threat is gone. You would have to search the local news for that information. There is outdoor showers and places to clean up your shoes, gear, etc...... Good luck with your travels. I am glad we went there. There is some beautiful water and we captured some amazing beach photos.
