Unfortunately, it is against the law to feed deer in Illinois. While this may seem cruel, there are many reasons this law was enacted. The biggest is spreading of diseases. This is our best effort to reduce the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease. CWD is an ALWAYS-fatal neurological disease found in deer, elk and moose that causes them to become emaciated, display abnormal behavior, lose coordination and die. As animal lovers, do we always agree with what is "best" or what we see as cruel? No, but is it better to have healthy populations of deer. We also have to worry about the food chain as CWD has proven to remain in carcasses for a long time.
