This shouldn't be a problem as one as you follow the proper guidelines for storage such as locked case, ammunition limited, etc. The main cause for worry would be your destination. Some states like illinois and New York might arrest you when you land in their state with what they consider to be an illegal firearm without the proper licenses.
I've found airports are different. Go way early and ask. I don't think you can fly with ammunition.
