You do not have to purchase ticket ahead of time, the are available at the door, but parking is limited somewhat so it is not a bad idea to buy them online ahead of time. If you are unable to go you can call them and let them know. We did that and went the following week due to the weather and that was not a problem
I bought mine ahead of time. It keeps you in a much shorter and faster moving line to get in. Also if you want to eat make reservations at the restaurant.
