The Washington State Patrolers make the decisions about when to require vehicles to put on chains to drive up and over Snoqualmie pass on the i90. They tend to be over zealous usually and require chains even when the road is only just "slushy" and still only bare concrete. I guess they are thinking "better safe than sorry" because so many drivers don't really know how to drive in snow. It is a Washington State Law that all vehicles are required to carry chains for their vehicle while driving over any pass in Washington State from November 1st through April 1st. It is not all that common we get continued and sustained snowfall over Snoqualmie Pass. However, in early January they closed the i90 for an unprecedented 4 straight days. This situation may have been because snow plow drivers were fired because of "mandate issues" and may have been "short staffed" as a result. Once they got "behind" on clearing the roads, it was a disaster. Most commonly the roads are bare. 4×4 R exempt usual
