I would say close to two hours to really enjoy the aquarium and to learn things see exhibits just to walk from one end to the other less than an hour but you won't know much when you leave take your time it's beautiful air-conditioned and the staff is wonderful
You can do it in an hour, but two is better. You'll probably get board after three hours.

If you are planning to visit the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island. You should plan it for the entire day. The reason I say this is because the Aquarium offers free programs, tours and adventures and exhibits. The hours are 9 am to 5 pm daily. The prices are adults ages 13-61 $12.95. Seniors ages 62 and older $11.95. Military $11.95. Children ages 3-12 $10.95. Ages 2 and younger free.
