You can walk to the far side of Balboa Island to a Ferry that will take you to Balboa Peninsula. The west of the Peninsula is the beach! I believe it is just under 2 miles from the hotel to the beach.
Its about a 20 min to half hour walk and not your typical so cal surf beach. Its in an inlet.
No; the beach is not within walking distance. There is a shuttle service that can drop you off at Fashion Island and that would be a "closer" walk, but you still have to walk about 1 mile, take the Balboa Island Ferryboat, then walk about and other 1/2 mile to get to the beach.
