You might be best to ask. If not, just be sneaky about it. That being said, many restaurants without a liquor license do encourage BYOB. I'm almost tempted to advise that it's better to beg for forgiveness than ask permission. Especially when there isn't a sign posted, which I don't think I've seen. And if there is, you can just be apologize and tell them it'll never happen again. Lots of strategies here.
