Sometimes very strong winds by themselves can blow over giant sequoia or redwoods, there are recent examples in Yosemite for 2021. Other factors which weaken trees are droughts, lightning strikes, fires, infestations, rot from fungi/etc. These giant sequoia trees have no permanent tap roots and redwoods have shallow root systems near the coast - which is another reason why high winds can uproot them. The Chandelier Tree—which was named not after its massive girth, but its dangling limbs that resemble a chandelier, the Chandelier tree In Leggett, CA is still upright.
