I questioned this as well and I was told because of the type of establishment, it's required by Pennsylvania liquor laws. I agree some common sense can be exercised, but I also commend them for sticking to the rules.
From what I understand, they have a policy of carding everyone...even if you were a 96 year old grand mom with a walker and carrying an air supply. Its a pain, and they know it, but they don't make any exceptions.
The requirement is 100% age proofing. The check my wife too and she is 60
Wegmans has a 100% carding policy at all their New York State locations as well and always has. PA law limits the amount of beer or wine that can be purchased at one transaction, at the store (but not at the beer distributor, go figure).
It is the law to card everyone. Wegmans could lose their license if not followed.
Its becomming pretty standard in pa.
