I'm not 100% sure but I believe if you're getting the new Real ID you can get an appointment online too. Plus if your not getting the Real ID and if you didn't use the same picture 4 years ago. Then they can use the same picture and print it out and mail it to you with out going into the DMV at all. But if you did then you have to go in and renew your picture because by law they need a new picture every 8 years.
Appointments are online for written test, and road test only. The only way to get 1 is online thru the MVC website. You can NOT get an appointment for anything else.
