Ft Vancouver had a substantial fort with 24 buildings including houses, the Chief Factor's residence, school, library, pharmacy, a bakery, blacksmith and carpenter shops, a chapel, warehouses and what was called a large manufacturing complex. It is deemed the largest non- indigenous settlement in the PNW of its time. It contained English, Scots, French Canadians, Irish, Hawaiians and native people including Iroquois and Cree. A survey in 1846 recorded 302 employees, of which 154 (43%) were Kanaka Hawaiians. The spoken language was mainly French Canadian, the records were kept in English.
