The ones on the ground are referred to as pit houses(there's another term that escapes me at the moment) but the real attraction and in my opinion an absolute marvel are the cliff dwellings they are spectacular. If you have a teen with challenge them to try and count and identify all the different languages they hear on your visit. People come from all over the world to see this place I've been a resident of Durango for 10yrs now I've been to mesa Verde 33 times and will go again before winter I'm sure
