When a diagnostic test is done they plug a machine into a special port to scan multiple locations within the vehicle these locations are called points. Depending on how many points are being tested is the number that's given to indicate how extensive the test is another words how many locations there getting information or a reading from.
Just how many things they can check
"Points are 6 places or 10 places within the vehicle where they check for problems where they occur. All the way up to 72 pt inspection
