A precious space with wonderful teachers and Sangha.

This is not a center that is welcoming to People of Color. I attended the center initially during the Sunday meditation/teachings/discussions and enjoyed these offers. Though people were not all that friendly, they were not rude. Having been fully involved in my old Kagyu center, I missed the Chenrezig practice and began attending their Wednesday night practice. One evening, before the chanting practice was to start, an older white gentleman told a racist joke in front of about 6 or so other white attendees. The joke had as it's punch line: "An Angry Black Woman". No one said anything, so he repeated himself. Because I was sitting behind him, he did not see me and because I was new to this center, and not really made to feel all that welcomed, I did not feel comfortable confronting the man. I thought the next best thing would be to advise the teacher leading the chanting. When I told the teacher this, he said that the man must have had a good reason to tell such a joke and dismissed my concerns. After that experience, I never went back. Clearly this "sacred" space is not safe for all to attend.

Coquille, when did you write this? It's not clear. If he is still there, I will gladly visit him.
