Stunning Historic Hotel You will feel transported back to the 1800's in this stunning property. Heavy woodwork throughout the lobby complete with period furniture. Sofas in the front windows to relax and people watch. And a large sunroom type area in the rear overlooking the railroad station. Our room was large with an imposing four poster bed along with Victorian style chairs and an antique secretary desk. A large granite vanity with sink and mirror was just off the bedroom with a clean bathroom as well. Even a large closet with iron and board. We were on the second floor overlooking Main St. with traffic noise at a minimum at night. Breakfast in the morning was found in the rear sunroom area and was plastic wrapped muffins and coffee. That's not breakfast, sorry. On the next block down is a French bakery and restaurant along with a family style cafe. Both were excellent. Stay here if you want the real turn of the century experience in a convenient location to the railroad and shops.

We loved this hotel! If you’re looking for an experience and not just another basic hotel, this is your place. It had so much character and charm, it felt like you were transported back to the early 20th century. Our room was spacious and very clean. The staff, especially Ray, were so kind and accommodating. The hotel is within walking distance of all the bars and restaurants downtown. 10/10 recommend staying at the General Palmer on your next visit to Durango!

We had a few issues that lowered our opinion of the place. 1) There was (is) tooth paste splatter on the bathroom mirror from the previous guest. Not a big deal but kind of gross. 2) there are room windows that let light in from the hallway. The lights never go out. I had to climb up and fix a towel over the window so that we could get some sleep. 3) Room didn’t have soap. Again, not a big deal but weird being that the rate is $170 a night. 4) the room was very hot and the air conditioner wouldn’t work. We have an 11 month old so a cooler room helps with keeping him a sleep. 5) Soap dispenser fell of the wall when I tried to use it. Ha! 6) You hear all of the other guests, the walls are thin. So, I know this all seems like petty complaints but I just didn’t feel like our stay was worth $170 a night. It’s a cool old building but save a few bucks and get an AirBnB.
