Built much better than the original! This bridge holds a special notoriety among anyone who studied advanced physics or vibrations, mostly because the original bridge was built without accounting for harmonic resonance and waved wildly in the wind…collapsing into pieces on November 7, 1940 after it ‘matched’ the harmonic resonance of the strong wind (you can recreate this phenomenon by humming next to a guitar string and the string will vibrate to match your humming…bear in mind the bridge was not as flexible as the guitar string and was not built to make rock n’ roll….so it burst into pieces) Well, the new bridge does not disappoint. It’s sturdy, steady, and ain’t budgin’ a inch…like an old state employee at the local DMV. I walked from one end of the bridge to the other and back again, taking in a great view of The Puget Sound - Tacoma on one side and beaches at the foot of forested suburbs on the other. It’s a nice walk for some exercise and also to visit a piece of history in what was once the most pathetic and ridiculous engineering mistake ever made on public infrastructure in American history.

Was a nice walk and I felt very safe while walking on it. Such a very nice view of the water down below.

Great views. You can see Steilacoom Ferry Dock, Ketron Island, Titlow Park, Fox Island, The Narrows and the Famous Narrows Bridge. Also the bridge offers a grand walkway for pedestrians and bicyclists. Get real close to fast moving traffic too.

No where parking. Great for hiking (along the sidewalk on the bridge) and photographing (from near of far view points).

No the Wind made it vibrates in harmonic frequency of vibrations brought yhe brigde down. an engineering disaster only one hurt was a dog that died
Yes buy a house with a view
Only a dog died because it wouldn't get out of the car
$3 an axle; so a 5 axle semi and trailer would be $15; and $18 is the top toll
$5.25 Good to Go tag; $6.25 cash or credit at the Toll Booth and $7.25 Pay by Mail for a 2 axle vehicle. Pay by Mail means driving as if you had a Good to Go tag and whomever vehicle is registered to gets the bill in the mail.
Yes... With two bridges (eastbound and westbound) Eastbound currently has a toll but I've heard chatter about removing the toll...
No
Then from Tacoma take Kitsap transit or sound transit bus to Kitsap P/R
Yes.
That is correct. You do know that you're asking about a dog involved with an event that happened over 50 years ago.
Yes there is a toll East bound 16 towards Tacoma. No toll West bound towards Gig Harbor. Drive through or camera but easier and cheaper to pay as you drive to the toll booth.
$3 per axle, not six like Susan Soss said. For most cars that means $6 total.
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge averages about 90,000 cars a day. The commute has been so much easier since the 2nd bridge was erected.
2,800 feet
Pay By Mail for $2 more. We'll take a photo of your vehicle and send the vehicle's registered owner a toll bill in the mail so you don't need to stop driving.... OR You may pay with cash or credit card at a toll booth for $1 more. Use SR 16 exit 8.(I found that info on google)
Many people still believe that Galloping Gertie and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge (TCN) are the same structure. The confusion may stem from the fact that both bridges bore the name, "Tacoma Narrows Bridge." Additionally, many people mistakenly assume that the east & west "new" bridges are both "modern." Actually, the current West bound bridge that replaced the ill-fated "original" bridge, was built (completed) in 1950. The eastbound bridge was completed in 2007, 50+ years later.
Actually, it was major design flaws. It had been engineered using designs from other bridges which were shorter spans, and 2 elements in particular were different than those known to have been used successfully before. The bridge had bad aerodynamic characteristics, and didn't have the strength and rigidity to either bear updrafts, or prevent/relieve air pressure below the deck. It actually waved throughout it's construction, and rather than gaining the strength and rigidity the designer thought it would as construction progressed, it actually got worse.
There are 2 bridges. Both are 4 lanes wide and are one way travel. The old bridge is westbound traffic and the new is used for eastbound. The new bridge is considerably wider than the old with an actual usable shoulder and a sidewalk that is probably 8 to 10 feet wide. Pedestrians are only allowed on the new bridge.
Yes they do. You will pay an extra dollar using cash or credit. Using a Good To Go account is the cheapest and easiest way to cross, and you don't have to stop.
$5.00 Good to Go Pass $6.00 Pay at Toll Booth $7.00 Pay by Mail
