Second time I come here, they are super nice and very efficient. If you have quite a lot of items, it's better to take an appointment. Read their website to make sure you don't bring stuff they don't take. They will double-check with you on-site.
Dan Nichols
Took my items with no hassle, quick, didn't have to get out of my car.

So grateful for this wonderful service. Thank you! Motor oil, check. Nasty old garden chemicals, check. Old car batteries, check. Old smoke detector, check. Florescent light bulbs, check. Old flashlight batteries, check. Thank you! Friendly service, too!

I was able to responsibly dispose of batteries, light bulbs, and paint thinner to protect our ground water from these contaminants.

Yes - paint can be brought to the Home Toxics Center. Empty paint cans can be left at the curb for your regular trash pickup.
Our staff can pour the oil out while you wait and return your container to you. If you have a weekday appointment we can do so right away, but if you request this on a Saturday we will have you park in the parking lot and you may have a to wait a few minutes for a staff member to become free to do so.
Hi Joe! The Home Toxics Center does accept household batteries.Visit https://www.washtenaw.org/287/Home-Toxics-Paint-Oil-Pesticides-More to make an appointment and view our complete list of accepted items. :)
We are typically open the first three Saturdays of the month, but are closed on weekends that have a County Holiday. Please check the website to check if we are open the Saturday you are looking to arrive. We are open this coming Saturday Sept 10th.
Hello, we cannot take kitchen knives as they are not a household hazardous waste. We suggest either donating them to local thrift stores or re-stores for reuse. If they are not usable, place in your household trash inside of a rigid container like a detergent bottle or coffee can (secure any pop-off lids with duct tape) for the safety of our trash workers.
We cannot accept appliances or electronics. If the microwave is still working, some stores may accept it as a donation such as the Habitat for Humanity Restore or others near you. The Recycle Ann Arbor Drop-Off Station can take appliances and electronics for recycling, fees may apply. For more options visit our Trash to Treasure Guide at washtenaw.org/ttt.
Hello, we cannot accept appliances or refrigerants. The Recycle Ann Arbor Drop Off Station can accept that item.
We can accept those syringes appropriately packed in a sharps container, as long as it is not business medical waste. You can view our website for more packaging instructions. Thanks!
No, we cannot accept carpet and padding. There are a few other options for you if you can't utilize your home trash - bring it to the Recycle Ann Arbor Recovery Yard for waste disposal (fees apply) or to an upcoming County Clean Up Day. I'd suggest contacting your trash service first to see if you can request a bulky waste pick-up. Some municipalities (like Ypsilanti Township) have dumpsters their residents can utilize for purposes like this.
We can currently accept walk-ins without appointments for small loads of material - less than about two moving boxes or less than 10 cans of paint, from 9:30 am to 4:15 pm, Monday-Friday. Seasonal Saturday Collection Events do not require appointments. As always, you must be a Washtenaw County resident bringing materials that were not used for a business purpose. For more information or to make an appointment, visit our website here: https://www.washtenaw.org/287/Home-Toxics-Paint-Oil-Pesticides-More
If your dropping it off at the toxic site, just make sure it's not leaking.
The Home Toxics Center is a free service that accepts voluntary donations. The Center is not tax funded, and all donations go directly towards disposal costs. For context, it costs about $5 for us to dispose of the average can of latex paint we receive.
Phyll, we usually are able to accept tires only at certain Clean Up Day events (posted at washtenaw.org/cleanup), but we will not be holding another this year. Recycle Ann Arbor can take your tires at either the Drop Off Station or the recovery yard, fees may apply so I’d check their information before arriving.
James, our Home Toxics Center cannot take microwaves. We usually accept electronics only at Clean Up Day events (posted at washtenaw.org/cleanup), but we will not be holding another Clean Up Day this year. Recycle Ann Arbor can take your microwave at the Drop Off Station (currently they are only accepting electronics on Mondays). Fees may apply.
Great question! Yes we do take them - but there are a few things we ask you to do when you're bringing them to us. Household Batteries: All types are accepted. Remove batteries from packaging, especially button cells. Please tape terminals or 9-volt batteries and rechargeable batteries. Please separate out all lithium-ion batteries (rechargeable, cell phone, laptop, cameras, watches, hearing aids, etc.). Place batteries in separate plastic bags or small boxes. To see a list of what is accepted, feel free to visit our website: https://washtenaw.org/hometoxics Call the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) hotline at 734-222-3950 to schedule a weekday drop-off appointment. Appointments are available Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. If a Solid Waste Specialist is not available to take your call, leave a voicemail. Under normal circumstances, your call will be returned in one business day.
You have to get an appointment. Call them.
They only take toxic stuff, so probably not. They regularly refuse non-toxic stuff I bring by which is mixed up with my toxics - I drop stuff off for my job.
They don't take TV's at the Home Toxics program but you can take them and other electronics for a fee to the Drop Off Station at 2950 E. Ellsworth. It's $1per diagonal inch Best Buy will also take old TV's for $25.
