GUIDE REVIEW (folks at the shop are fab too!): Today, women are debating whether we should “bring our whole selves to work” or not, but Kristen long-ago decided that she’s 100% in. What sets her apart is her ability to read people just as well as she reads the water. Wherever you are in your fly-fishing journey, she will eagerly meet you there. I am a very new angler, falling rapidly down the fly-fishing-rabbit-hole; on a recent trip, Kristen was able to address my barrage of questions, and then she would connect those [seemingly disconnected] questions to an immediate skill-based action - magic! To lift women up and to watch them find their confidence by “fishing independently” is genuinely the joy of her life and that energy is wholly felt on her trips.

Starting going to Emerald Water Anglers a few weeks ago. Being new to fly fishing, I knew nothing about what type of gear I needed, or what rig I needed for the type of fish I was going after. On each occasion I went there, they were nothing but friendly and super helpful. From guiding me to pick the right gear, to letting me know which flies/nymphs were best for the locations I was going. They a local business, fairly priced, and very much needed. Do yourself a favor and go there before you decide to buy gear online. Support the experts that will help you get better.

I went out for a women's retreat weekend with Kristen from Emerald Water Anglers and had an amazing experience. It was a great deal financially and was exactly what I was looking for in terms of learning, instruction, and outdoors time with others. It was just me, Kristen, and one other student/client. We camped for the weekend and brought our own camping gear, although Kristen made an amazing dinner and breakfast for us! Beyond fishing, it was wonderful just to hang out around the campfire and chat about fishing, life, etc. Proper COVID-19 precautions were taken and I felt safe on that front, too. All fishing gear was provided and we had two awesome days of fishing for sea run cutthroat trout on the Puget Sound. Kristen provided a perfect mix of detailed instruction, constant openness to questions and requests for feedback- and also letting us just fish and practice and try to learn. The location was gorgeous and Kristen's knowledge provided us with great weather despite questionable conditions elsewhere around the region. I can't recommend Kristen and EWA enough for anglers (especially women!) of any ability level or area of interest. I thought of it as a very low pressure, high opportunity environment for learning, and I'm excited to fish with Kristen again!

I drove past EWA several times going to the post office to grab my grandfathers mail. He taught me to fly fish and tie fly's and rod's in the Black Hill of SD. I stopped in a couple years ago and I have bought a rod, waders, fly lines and fly's since. Great shop, knowledgeable employees.

Questions & Answers

We are traveling to Seattle then to Olympic 7/22-7/31. Hoping to fish in the park. Thinking the upper HOH and tributaries. Will be stopping in to your shop. What rods and floating or weighted line? Thanks

Hi David, Thank you for the note about your upcoming trip to the area. I think the upper Hoh and Bogachiel are great options. If you are going to focus on the tribs, a 3wt would be ideal with floating lines of course. If you are going to fish the main river, I would recommend a 5wt most likely again with a floating line. Look forward to having you stop in David, safe travels and we will get you all set when we see you. Dave & EWA Staff

What are the Covid safety practices like here?

Here at EWA we all wear a mask, wipe down our surfaces still several times a day, limit the maximum number of people in the store and provide complimentary masks and sanitizer upon entry. Several of our staff have also been fully and some partially vaccinated. Masks are required by anyone in the store at any time and we offer curbside pick up for you if that is more comfortable...here to keep you safely fly fishing and comfortable. https://vimeo.com/418295380 EWA Staff

Good morning. I'm staying right next door to the Light House on Alki Beach. I brought my Fly rod with me from Cleveland Oh. Any suggestions regarding where best to fish? Thanks Ray Tusick

Do you teach fly casting to 9 year olds and if so do you provide the equipment?

Brian McKenna | Aug 11, 2022

Good morning Brian, Yes, we can teach fly casting to a 9 year old and happily provide the equipment. I would suggest a private so we can be focused on them the entire time. Let us know when you are ready to make it happen. EWA Staff

I might be staying with some friends on north Bainbridge in early Sept. I flyfish multiple species including lots of salt in Keys. Should I bring a rod? What flies? Thanks.

Rick Cockrum | Aug 11, 2022

Hey Rick, Thank you for the note, absolutely bring a fly rod, you are going to be here smack in the middle of the migratory coho/silver salmon season and there are a number of beaches there on Bainbridge you can fish from the bank with good shots at these fish. 6-8wt rod with a floating line, non tropical would be perfect and having tippet in the 10-15lb test range will be just fine. Fly wise, bring any baitfish patterns which would possibly imitate herring or sand lance as the will both be present in good numbers at that time. Some of the white baitfish used for Snook would also work well. Any other questions please don't hesitate to give us a call and we can point you in the right direction. Look forward to having you in the Puget Sound region.
