The public library is one of the last few beacons of hope that American civil society has. This library in particular is a shining example of that. The staff are friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. The library is always clean and has lots of space for people like me who are looking to sit down and work quietly for a few hours. With a recent remodel, they have technology that makes your visit more efficient and lots of public computers available. I highly recommend this little library, which is not so little anymore :)

Today I took my newborn son and my two older sons (3 and 5) to the library. As you can imagine, right now it’s very difficult to get out of the house by myself with three kids but we managed it this morning. We walked into the library and I was carrying my sons car seat, our library bag, diaper bag, and holding hands with my three year old. We went to the book return station and started returning our books. My newborn was asleep in his car seat and I had white noise playing on his portable sound machine. Elizabeth, an employee, walked out of the back room and walked up to me and said in an really nasty tone of voice “can you turn down that sound machine, it is REALLY loud.” I was extremely surprised that she approached me like this and upset by the way she spoke to me. Let’s set aside for a moment that it was a portable sound machine and cannot even reach “loud”, or that the library was completely empty as it was just after opening. It was very clear that I had my hands literally and figuratively full; It’s hard enough to leave the house with a newborn, let alone two other kids, and my sons and I are quietly returning books, not wreaking havoc or yelling or running around, and she comes out of the back office to reprimand me. She chose to speak to me like I had done something wrong from the get-go. If she had shown an ounce of kindness or respect to me or even used the word “please” I maybe wouldn’t have been so put off by her. This isn’t the first time I’ve witnessed her bad attitude, but it’s the first time it has been directed at me, and for something so completely ridiculous. After that interaction I felt ashamed and asked another parent when he arrived if the sound was too loud, and he assured me it was not. I don’t even want to bring my kids back to the library because I don’t want to interact with her again.

Fantastic library! We love the kids activities and books. The play toys for the kids are also very fun.

Thank you for your question Jim. During the months leading up to the tax filing deadline, all Library System locations have Federal 1040 and 1040-SR tax forms and accompanying instruction booklets on hand for free distribution to the public. Additionally, the United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides free income tax assistance to individuals and families with a household income of $60,000 or less. Their IRS-trained and certified volunteers serve at 2 Library System locations to help participants receive all eligible tax credits and deductions. For this service, appointments are required. More information can be found at www.greenvillelibrary.org/financial-counseling-and-tax-help as well as our business and money resources at www.greenvillelibrary.org/business-and-money
