Very quiet. Almost no one there. Nice for a little hiking. Lots of Crystal quartz. It was very hot there the day we visited. Bring plenty of water. There are no services around for at least 30 miles.

No. Tumco Historic Site is protected under various Federal laws (antiquities act) and items can not be removed. Areas outside of the historic site can be metal detected, but you still must know if an item you discovered is protected (50 years old is the starting threshold). You also can not remove any native American items located, and must fill in any holes made if digging.
Yes and no. Within the washes, you could gather up to 5 gallons for dry panning, but no digging as there are still active claims on file.
