Was seen rather promptly for stomach pain, nurses and ultrasound tech were incredibly accommodating. Attending Doctor was incredibly short, dismissive and arrogant which was a weird and sad contrast. Took 3 hours from start to finish which is good but still left a bad taste in my mouth. Better than other hospitals in the area overall.

Waiting room wasn’t too packed; was told it wasn’t too busy of a night, but it took about 2 hours to be seen by the doc in a bed in the hallway. I saw Dr. Bess Stillman who was kind & seemed to genuinely want to help me. She was willing to listen to me and respected that I truly do know my body since I’m stuck in it 24/7. Unfortunately the causes of my issues weren’t identified and nothing helped too much. The pain I was experiencing wasn’t temporarily resolved, but it was brought down from a 9 to a 6. Upon discharge, Dr. Stillman said she would put in a referral for neurology and pain medicine to get me the help I really need. She said she’d try to get me in within the next week or so, and that she hasn’t had any issues with that in the past. I was so grateful to at least have next steps for help. A couple days later I was told Mayo’s ED docs are considered “outside physicians” and that any referrals they send have to go through the same extensive process as that from a non-Mayo clinician, and that because she’s not considered ‘a Mayo doctor’ she actually was not able to refer me to the pain medicine specialty. I was devastated and right back to where I was before I went in for help. Having those referrals to get in quickly gave me hope… which was then squashed. I don’t understand for the life of me why Mayo Clinic would treat their own ED docs like outside physicians, unable to effectively refer their patients for the follow up care they need after a visit to the ER.

Avoid this emergency room if possible….very rude and unprofessional staff. They missed multiple pelvic fractures that I was unaware of until I had imaging done at a new doctor weeks later when I was still in excruciating pain.

Appalling lack of empathy by ER physicians! We are longtime Mayo patients (20 years) but this may be it for us with Mayo in general. My husband had a very rare and serious reaction to a gel injection in his knee administered by Mayo at the Tempe sports medicine clinic. He suffered with escalating excruciating pain for 10 days but over this last weekend the pain and swelling were so severe we felt we had no option but to go to ER since his ortho doctor was not available. The ER dr reluctantly treated him by a tortuous draining of fluids and sending us home. We saw his ortho dr 2 days later who confirmed he'd had a severe reaction but she couldn't pursue the necessary draining and steroid treatment because my husband was scheduled for eye surgery the next day.Unfortunately today he had to cancel the surgery because the knee pain was beyond coping with. At this point we returned to ER in hopes that they could admit him and get to the bottom of the excruciating pain . This time we were rudely told that ER or the hospital could do nothing further. They don't treat orthopedic infections or complications!! My husband was scheduled to have Knee replacement at Mayo Hospital in the near future but no longer. We will find competent care outside of Mayo.

Questions & Answers

Can anyone be seen in youre emergency department?

6 Answer No, you must be an established patient of the clinic with your own MRN number. Once they accept you as a patient, if they find they think you'd be a good fit and they establish care then you may go to their ER. Like Answer
