Very attentive and thorough work . Long Island Power was hired to install a full home generator. There were leaks in our gas lines and new lines had to be installed by plumbers. Mike explained the details and we were guided through the process. We appreciated the total attention given to the complexity of the task. Thank you Anthony and crew. We can now confront the winter without the anxiety that we previously faced. In addition, Kelly was very responsive to my questions when I called the office. Information given was always courteous and accurate.

I purchased a new whole house generator from this company in January of 2020. It broke down after 30 hours of use. It has been down since July. I have tried effortlessly for them to fix it with only one reply. COVID 19. Which is bull. This thing is in a back yard. ( Mike was the only nice person to me) I purchased it locally so I can have them service It. ($5700) It was much cheaper elsewhere, so do a google search. They are 5 minutes from my house, and my corporation is right down the street from them. I only wish their service worked as good as my product which has been serving Long Island for 55 years and is most likely under their counter right now, and the employees that work there. I wish I purchased it elsewhere. Generac has been contacted, I told them I want it replaced. Not fixed.

You’ll need to call a professional for the more labor-intensive, yearly maintenance tasks: changing the filters and engine oil, as well as inspecting the alternator and transfer switch.
To ensure your starter keeps working, run your generator for at least 30 minutes once every three months.
It’s particularly important when buying a generator to consider any future home renovation projects. If you plan on adding extra rooms or a new wing – or if you’ve been eyeing power-hungry appliances – you’ll want to let us know so we can properly accommodate your needs.
Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to get a generator that’s slightly bigger than your current needs can account for. Though this means wasting fuel, it allows you to keep everything powered if your needs increase. For most people, power needs increase over time, whenever they choose to buy a newer, more power-hungry appliance.
A "select-circuit" generator system is a cost-effective way to power your home’s basic needs and to get you comfortably through a power outage. These units can power up to 10-16 electrical loads in your home, including the fridge, some lights, television, and the microwave. It’s a perfect small home generator solution.
To get a properly-sized generator, you’ll want to talk to a professional. No two homes are the same, so it’s best to speak with someone who understands your needs and priorities. When shopping for standby generators, it’s important to choose one that’s the right size. If you get a generator that’s too big, you’ll be wasting money on power you can’t use.
When the power goes out, especially if the majority of your company is relying on electricity, a stationary generator is your best bet to continually running your business without skipping a beat. With a swift gush of wind, power lines can be blown down, disconnecting hundreds from the grid
Yes, our generator installations also include start up and adjustments of the unit by our factory trained and certified generator service technician.
Yearly maintenance tasks include changing the filters and engine oil, as well as inspecting the alternator and transfer switch. To schedule a maintenance session, call us today.
Whole-house standby generator options are the best backup power solution for extra-large and luxury and smart homes. They power an array of high-wattage appliances – from double ovens to hot tubs – with the performance you could expect from commercial generators.

Every month, you should be checking for obvious trouble signs, like pest infestations, as well as more technical metrics. You want to check the batteries and wiring for corrosion, you want to check the catch tank for coolant, and you want to make sure there’s an adequate level of oil.
You can safely operate appliances plugged directly into the generator. You can power your refrigerator, power tools, and computers (for example) by running long extension cords to the generator.
If you need to power a refrigerator, microwave, sump pump, and lights, then a 5,000-7,000 watt generator should be sufficient. If you want to run more power-hungry items such as a water heater or air conditioning unit, you will need to look at a 10,000-watt model.
Add up the Total Watts to determine how much power your home is likely to use during an outage. Multiply the Total Watts x 1000 to find kilowatts. Multiply kilowatts x 1.25 to add a margin of safety and for future power needs. This is the minimum Generator Capacity required for your home.
In terms of safety, ease of use, and convenience, the standby generator wins in all categories. However, while fuel storage, proper ventilation, and risk of theft all work against the portable generator, but it will usually win out on price.
Let us show you exactly how a standby generator keeps your home's lights and appliances powered. From innovative power management systems that help you power more of your home with a more affordable generator, to the ins and outs of living with a generator system - we've got you covered.
Maybe it's because our never-ending commitment to first-class customer service. Our customers come first and you can check out our reviews and testimonials page to see what our customers are saying about generator installations, service and maintenance! We are also highly trained, certified and licensed professionals, which we believe is key in providing the best customer experience.
No two homes are alike in the Town of Brookhaven. We know that. It's why we are dedicated to tailoring an automatic standby generator system for your home's specific needs. We do an onsite generator installation estimate and design. We will review your concerns and go over what you expect to be powered in your home during an outage. We will then suggest a solution best fit for your home and budget.
You can install the generator on your own. However, we recommend a professional installation and commissioning to make sure things are properly installed.
Place your generator outdoors in a location that will keep the generator protected and prevent exhaust emissions from getting inside your building. As long as it’s close enough to provide power, the exact location isn’t important.
Your generator needs the correct type of fuel. Make sure you have reliable access to natural gas and/or diesel, depending on the model you choose. Secondly, your generator needs thorough maintenance on a regular basis.
With proper maintenance and correct usage, a standby generator set can last 20 or more years! Take good care of your generator and enjoy your backup power for years to come.
A well-maintained generator is a very reliable source of continuous electricity. If you need to keep your business running during a power outage or need something for a primary source of power, you should have a generator.
In general, most commercial generators can be converted from 60 Hz to 50 Hz. The general rule of thumb is 60 Hz machines run at 1800 Rpm and 50 Hz generators run at 1500 Rpm. With most generators changing the frequency will only require turning down the rpm’s of the engine.
No, in almost all cases portable generators do not have the power capacity to auto start. In order to utilize auto start, the generator should have an electric starter or electric choke (for gasoline units) and auto stop and start controls. Auto-start and safety equipment greatly increases the cost of portable generators, to the point that no one wants to buy them. This is why you will not find them for sale.
The ATS (automatic transfer switch) is responsible for transferring power from a standard source to emergency power. It recognizes when the usual power system fails and automatically jumpstarts the generator into backup action.
The answer to this question depends on how often you plan to use your generator. If power outages and blackouts are a common occurrence, it’ll pay off rather quickly to purchase a generator.
The best size generator for your home or business depends on the type of appliances it needs to fuel, such as equipment, pumps, air conditioners and other electronic devices.
Just like any other mechanical equipment, generators also need to be maintained in order to prevent permanent damage and keep your unit in proper working order.
NO! Since portable generators run on gas and use oil, they emit exhaust which contains carbon monoxide.
Standby generators require installation be performed by an experienced professional. In addition to hooking up the transfer switch, a licensed electrician will make sure that everything is installed properly so that your warranty is protected and remains valid.
The simple answer is no. The more detailed answer is no, because it is not only extremely dangerous but also illegal.
Generators vary in cost depending on a number of factors including whether it’s a standby or portable, the electrical capacity (watts), and the features of the unit.
There are 24, 48 and 72-hour tanks available. You will also want to monitor the generator's oil consumption to make sure that it isn't running low. If you are using your generator for long periods of time, it is a good idea to shut it down every 24 hours, let it cool and add oil if necessary.
In a typical home, essential items will average 5000 - 7500 watts of power to run.
Whole house generators (home standby generators) are the best generators for home use. They are designed to provide ample power for your appliances and HVAC systems. Portable generators are often used on job sites to power air compressors, nail guns, saws, hammer drills and other equipment.
Add up the Total Watts to determine how much power your home is likely to use during an outage. Multiply the Total Watts x 1000 to find kilowatts. Multiply kilowatts x 1.25 to add a margin of safety and for future power needs. This is the minimum Generator Capacity required for your home.
Whole house generators are expensive, but installing one can be worth it if you work from home, experience frequent or prolonged power outages, store lots of cold food, or live in a climate where heating or cooling is essential. Generators can run for weeks with enough fuel and proper maintenance.
A standby generator adds value to your home when installed by a professional. With the right permits and if a generator install is up to code, studies have shown a generator can increase a home value anywhere between 1-4%. Many home sellers install a generator on their home for a quicker sale and higher return on the home.
All cities and towns have different codes in terms of how far a generator should be from a house. In most cases, generators can be 18 inches from a dwelling and 5ft from any opening of the house. But check with your local city before installation.
It is recommended that you have a trained, licensed contractor install the unit because of the need to connect to the electrical panel and natural gas line to your home. Your contractor will obtain the necessary permits and perform all of the necessary components of the installation.
It’s recommended to schedule service every six months with an authorized Generac dealer. They will perform oil and filter changes to keep your generator working smoothly for years to come.
When a power outage hits, an automatic backup generator supplies power to your home. Once your electrical power returns, the unit switches off until the next time it is needed. Generators ensure that you are never without electricity in your home.
Portable generators often run on gasoline, and use a small engine. Portable generators are best suited to contractors and those who want to use a generator at different locations. An automatic generator is permanently installed with your electrical service, and comes on automatically when a power outage occurs. Automatic generators run on natural gas, propane, or diesel fuel.
Safety, Security, Peace of Mind...and the list goes on. While everybody has different, priorities, everyone can benefit from a backup generator. Keeping the heat on, to running your business or maintaining your security system, electricity is an important part of daily life - try to imagine your life without it.
An automatic standby generator is a back up electrical system that operates whether you are home or away. Within seconds of an outage, it automatically supplies power directly to your home’s electrical circuit breaker box. After utility power returns, the generator shuts itself off and waits for the next outage. It operates on natural gas or liquid propane gas and sits outside just like a central air conditioning unit.
No...the generator fuel costs would be much more expensive than buying power from the utility company since their cost to produce electricity is divided among thousands of customers.
This should not occur if the system has been properly sized and installed by Long Island Emergency Power. But if by some unusual circumstance this does occur Generac generators are equipped with overload protection. In the rare event of an overload, the generator’s circuit breaker will trip, disconnecting the unit from the load. Simply correct the overload and reset the breaker in the generator.
A commitment must be made to properly maintain your generator to ensure reliability and a long service life. This is not an air-conditioning unit or furnace that can go years without service, you are generating electricity! Our recommendation is to have your generator serviced once per year unless you have additional needs such as medical equipment.
MAYBE! As part of your initial site survey, your Project Manager will complete a Gas Inventory Report. Once the model of your present gas meter is recorded, your Project Manager will take an inventory of all of the gas-fueled appliances. In most cases, if a gas meter upgrade is required by your local gas utility it is a simple process at a minimal cost to the homeowner.
The air-cooled generators are all about 66db’s at 20 feet. What does this mean? It means you can have a regular conversation between two people standing next to a running air cooled generator. Remember, Generac has been manufacturing generators for 60 years; they are designed for residential neighborhoods.
Every home owner’s requirement is different. Your generator will be sized based on the electrical load it will be carrying. The size of your house does not matter unless we are sizing for whole house transfer, nor does the size electrical service feeding your home. It all comes down to what you want to run during an outage. The only real answer is to have Long Island Emergency Power provide a complimentary site survey to recommend a proper solution to fit your specific requirements.
Typically, at least once a year or 100-150 hours of use. Use our convenient maintenance calculator and scheduler to pick the recommended service plan for your unit. Best of all you will be able to schedule when you want the service to be completed.

The engines! Air cooled generators come with engines that use fans to force air across the engine for cooling, while liquid-cooled generators use enclosed radiator systems for cooling, similar to an automobile. Generally, liquid cooled engines are used on larger kW generators due to the larger engines required for the higher power output.
You may be wondering if you even need a permanent standby generator for your home. There are certain situations where a standby generator should be a part of your home—including the need for powered medical equipment, if your neighborhood has regular prolonged outages from storms or weather, and how well your family members can tolerate disruptions to everyday life. Homes with elderly residents and children, in areas with regular outages, or regular severe weather outbreaks, should consider installing a permanent standby generator.
Depending on your generator, you should be able to run your central air unit. Look for a generator that includes an ACCM transfer switch. These switches will allow you to run a central air system that offers anything below a 4-ton rating.
If your home is between 1200 to 3000 sq. feet, a 5000-7000 watt generator will allow you to run most electrical appliances during power outages. These items may include a refrigerator, lights, TV, and water pumps. Larger generators such as ones in the 10,000 to 15,000 watt area, can run quite a bit more and will allow you to live in the comfort you are accustomed to until your power is restored.
The best way to get the right generator is to have an electrician come out and complete and assessment. You will need to think about what electrical appliances you would need to run during an power outage or emergency. Talking with an electrician you will be able to work out what the right size system is for your home.
Do I need to start my generator frequently to make sure it works?
Sometimes emergencies occur when you are not home, even when you are out of town. In these situations it is nice to have remote access over your home’s electrical equipment. The good news is many companies are now creating generators that can be turned on and accessed remotely. This allows you to turn your generator on no matter how far away you are.
When maintained correctly, a generator should last upwards of 20 years or be able to run for up to 12,000 hours in its lifetime.
Do you need access to the inside of the house when servicing my system?
Your manufacturer warranty covers the unit for equipment failure and/or defective parts during the warranty coverage period. Please contact us to purchase and extended warranty. (All units are not eligible)
No…the generator fuel costs would be much more expensive than buying power from the utility company since their cost to produce electricity is divided among thousands of customers. Our automatic generators are produced for use as backup to utility power specifically and should not be used as primary power. Please refer to the warranty policy for additional information.
YES! Over time the oil inside your generator will break down, condensation will build up and the wearable parts will start to become less effective. The installation of a generator is a significant investment, the cost of protecting it is a fraction of this cost.
Yes. The power coming from your generator is just as safe as what you normally have coming out of the wall socket. The spikes or surges that accompany power generation are just a normal aspect of electricity. However, when considering sensitive or expensive electronic equipment running off a wall outlet, you should use a good surge protector to guard against small influxes of power.
To register your warranty, have an authorized service technician complete a post-installation Warranty Start-Up at your home. Then, instead of your warranty beginning on the day the generator is purchased, it begins on the day your service technician submits your generator system’s details to the Warranty Start-Up program.
Most generators run between 69 DBL-79 DBL. Check your Owner’s Manual for decibels.
This depends on the engine size and gas tank size. Check your Owner’s Manual for run time.
Yes. Use a good heavy gauge cord such as 10 AWG or 12 AWG, no longer than one hundred feet.
No. You need a licensed electrician to set your generator up with an automatic transfer switch.
No, it needs some type of shelter from the elements, but it needs to be a minimum of three feet away from all sides with one opened end.
Yes, it is always good for safety reasons.
A properly maintained engine should provide over 20 years of operation under emergency standby conditions. Keep in mind that the units are not intended to provide continuous power (24 hours a day, 365 days a year).

Every generator set must be tested under load for 10 minutes at least once a week. If you will not use your generator for a long time, please perform the instructions given in the Maintenance and User's Manual about storage. Storage is very important for the service life of generators and must be performed by an authorized service shop. After storage for a long time, the generator must be prepared for operation by an authorized service. This is especially important in terms of its warranty.
Fuel consumption of a generator set depends on its load. The lesser the load, the longer the operation time.
Depending on the circumstances, your generator might be overloaded or underloaded. In this case its service life can be shorten, its operational efficiency can decrease, its service life can shorten, and it can suffer damage, as explained elsewhere above. You should ensure your generator to be used for the category indicated on its label or explained by your dealer. This is especially important for its warranty too.
Generators can contain different units and options depending on their brand. Main units are: Engine Alternator Radiator Chassis Daily fuel tank Battery Control panel Transfer panel
Calculation of the generator capacity needed by a user requires specialty and depends on various factors. Related factors include the operation category, properties of the loads, ambient conditions, and optional products.
Exhausts, bodies and fans of all generator sets emit a noise. Depending on the type of the site where the generator is installed, certain measures are necessary.
Category (standby, prime, continuous) of your generator set has been indicated on its label. If a generator is used above its rating, the following problems might happen: Engine might overheat Wearing of the engine might increase Alternator's windings might overheat Lubricant might get thinned and lubrication pressure might decrease Service life of the engine might shorten
It refers to the number of revolutions of your generator set per minute. It is usually 1,500 or 3,000 RPM for engines and alternators at 50Hz, and 1,800 or 3,600 RPM for 60Hz.
All our products are warranted against part and manufacturing faults. Please review the documents delivered with your product or contact your dealer for detailed information about the terms and scope of warranty.
Running a generator above the capacity rating indicated on its label is as much wrong as running it below related capacity rating, because its service life might be shortened and it might suffer serious damage. This is especially true for generators having large capacity ratings. Minimum load allowed for standby generator sets is 30% of its total rating. The following problems might happen if a generator runs without load or under low load: Its exhaust and air suction system might suffer lubricant or fluid leaks Carbon deposits might accumulate on its cylinder liners or exhaust manifold Parts of its engine might be damaged due to wear Lubricant might get thinned to cause the lubrication quality to decrease White smoke might be emitted
All home and light commercial generators should be serviced after each 50 hours of run time or once a year. Remember that maintenance is the key to having a generator that lasts.
Always know which type of fuel your generator requires. Using the wrong fuel can cause big headaches—or damage that’s expensive to fix. Ask our staff if you ever have any questions about how to power your generator. Home generators: Gas, diesel, LP, or natural gas Light commercial generators: Gas, diesel, LP, or natural gas RV generators: Gas, diesel, or LP Agricultural generators: Gas, diesel, LP, or natural gas
Warranties are available for our home generators, light commercial generators, and RV generators. To learn more, please visit our website.
Generators will last for years if properly maintained. Routine yearly generator service is key for getting the most life out of your unit.
Each home generator we install is different. The total cost varies based on the size of the unit and how much labor is involved for the generator installation.
Think of which appliances you'd like to keep running during your power outage, and then look on the labels to see what their wattage is. Once you have that information, add up all the wattages of your appliances, and then look for a generator that can handle the wattage you need. If you have higher wattage needs or your area tends to have many outages, you'll definitely want to research standby generators. If you are thinking of buying a portable generator, consider the fuel type and its cost. You'll need to keep a lot of fuel on hand to be able to run the generator nonstop for more than a few hours.
