What is gum disease?

Clint Newman, DDS | Sep 30, 2022
Clint Newman, DDS | Sep 30, 2022

Gum disease, known in the dental industry as periodontal disease, is often painless in the early stages, causing many to ignore the early, hard to see, signs. It is possible to have periodontal disease without noticeable symptoms which is why regular dental check-ups and periodontal examinations are so important. We can help detect and correct the problems caused by periodontal disease. Gum disease begins when plaque, a sticky, colorless, film of bacteria, food debris, and saliva remains on the teeth and gums. These collections of bacteria produce toxins (acids) that inflame the gums causing soreness and bleeding while slowly destroying the bone. Brushing and flossing regularly and properly will ensure that damaging plaque is removed.

Clint Newman, DDS | Apr 17, 2022

You will be advised not to eat for a certain amount of time before your appointment. If you are undergoing treatment in the morning, for example, you may be asked not to eat after midnight the night before. If you undergo oral conscious sedation, Dr. Newman will tell you when to take your pills prior to the appointment. Because you will be groggy from the medication, you should also arrange to have someone take you to your appointment and drive you home afterward.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Clint Newman, DDS | Apr 17, 2022
Clint Newman, DDS | Apr 17, 2022

Most people are well aware of the stability that dental implants provide to crowns, bridges, and dentures. But many don't realize that they also stop your jaw from changing shape in ways that can compromise your oral health and make you look aged beyond your years. Tooth roots provide stimulation to the bone tissue in the jaw. When this stimulation is gone, it signals to the body to place a lower priority on maintaining the bone tissue in that area. Over time, this causes the jaw to atrophy (shrink). This is what causes the stereotypical image of a puckered mouth and recessed chin that has long been associated with advanced age. Meanwhile, this can cause your remaining natural teeth to shift out of alignment. Implants are the one and only restorative dentistry solution that can provide the stimulation your jaw needs in order to retain bone tissue and maintain your features. This is just one of several reasons why dental implants are a wise investment that can provide priceless benefits for the rest of your life.

What are the risks of dental crowns?

Clint Newman, DDS | Apr 17, 2022
Clint Newman, DDS | Apr 17, 2022

Crowns carry minimal risks. First, if the underlying infection is not completely removed, the crown will need to be removed and replaced. If this happens, the decay that remains under the restoration can spread and cause further dental health problems. The second risk of treatment is incorrect placement. If a crown is not placed correctly, it may not fit well. Having a poorly fitted crown can leave a patient more vulnerable to new decay. The surest way to avoid this issue is to trust your care to a reputable and experienced dental practice.

Dental crowns are often called "caps." These caps cover the entire tooth for the purpose of restoring teeth to their original shape and size. There are several types of dental crowns, but porcelain crowns are the most popular type offered at our Nashville, TN, office. Thanks to the properties of porcelain, these crowns resemble your natural teeth in color and texture. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color of your teeth, giving you a natural-looking, long-lasting solution. Additionally, crowns are highly durable and can last for many years. Dr. Newman and Dr. Underwood provide all-porcelain, metal-free crowns that look absolutely natural while providing excellent durability.

What is the best way to treat tooth discoloration?

Clint Newman, DDS | Apr 17, 2022
Clint Newman, DDS | Sep 30, 2022

Teeth whitening is the top aesthetic concern of many patients, and because of this, there are many products, services, and methods available to achieve a bright smile. Professional teeth whitening, which may include some types of bleaching, is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to restore the color of natural tooth enamel. This is considered the ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile, just as a professional cleaning is preferable to 'at home' cleaning systems. Over-the-counter products are available, however, they are less effective than professional treatments and may not be approved by the American Dental Association (ADA). Over time we all wear away the outer layer of our teeth's enamel, revealing a darker or yellow shade. The color of our teeth also comes from the inside of the tooth, which may become darker over time. Smoking, drinking coffee, tea, and wine may also contribute to tooth discoloration. Occasionally, tetracycline and fluorosis stains are difficult to bleach. This is when other procedures, such as veneers or crowns, become the best options to cover up such stains.

What is the process of getting veneers?

Clint Newman, DDS | Apr 17, 2022
Clint Newman, DDS | Sep 30, 2022

Dental Veneers will normally require two visits. Porcelain veneers are created from molds that your dentist will make from the shape and form of your current teeth. Using the mold as a base, the cosmetic dentist and the dental technicians at the porcelain dental lab will create the necessary dental veneers. While the veneers are being created, the cosmetic dentist will prepare the teeth for receiving the veneers.

Clint Newman, DDS | Apr 17, 2022
Clint Newman, DDS | Apr 17, 2022

Tooth brushing removes food particles, plaque, and most of the bacteria from all tooth surfaces, but not always in between the teeth. Most toothbrushes can't reach the tight areas in between teeth that are highly susceptible to decay and gum disease. Daily flossing is the best way to clean between the teeth and under the gumline. By flossing you are disrupting any growing colonies of bacteria, effectively preventing damage to the gums, teeth, and bone.
