Cipriani with the logo of a barman typifies the Cipriani experience. I sat at the bar one lazy afternoon, playing hooky from work. You can't be indecisive at the bar. And, I was. Barman worked the other guests and finally came back to me. I ordered a glass, and he poured the dregs, about 1/4 inch left in that bottle for me. As a face saving gesture, he said, try it. As you can imagine. It tasted off. Instead of opening a fresh bottle. He said, why don't you have the Pinot Grigio instead. Instead of bickering. I agreed and he poured the dregs from this bottle. I looked at him and he looked back. For $20 you want me to drink this. I said nothing. He opened a bottle and topped it off. The Pinot was not what I wanted but I sucked it up. It was a nice afternoon, I really just wanted to sit and enjoy the hussle of Grand Central. About 20 minutes, a waiter came by and offered some crackers. By then I had enough. Barman offered a paper cup so I could take the full glass of Pinot with me. I tipped him $4. $24.00 worth sitting at Cipriani drinking dregs? You decide.
