When you apply for a tourist visa online, does my hotel have to be reserved before? Or can I apply without booking a room?

As far as i know, all embassys are interested if they provide you visa, where will you stay in its country? And as a prove the hotel reservation is to be provided. So, if you want to get visa successfully then provide the hotel reservation, otherwise there is a big chance that it will be declined
