You have to be early to get in the park. There is a huge line of cars before the park even opens. Around 6:00, the line is empty, and by 7:00, the line is very long. So the best way to find parking is to get there very early, often an hour before it opens.

You are allowed to bring dogs in the park, as long you follow the rules and if your dog is not aggressive. There are a lot of dogs in the park.

There is no camping or camp grounds at Hopatcong State Park. I worked there last summer. There is picnicing areas with grills and picnic tables. There is swimming when lifeguards are present. There is a dock for you to bring your own boats and go out on the lake (they do not rent out water vessels). There is a concession stand in the summer.
If you want Camping grounds, I suggest Stephens State Park. If you want to stay in the local area.

Here’s what I was told . One of the reasons is there is a lifeguard shortage. (Because Nj won’t pay these college kids a fair salary) And since most people go there to swim they close gates when a certain number of people are in the water because you can’t have 400 people swimming and only 1 lifeguard on duty. So it’s not about the size of the park. It’s about money, the state won’t pay a competitive salary to lifeguards so they go get a lifeguard job at a small municipal pool for $5 more an H

It's a big lake. It seems to be quite clean all the time, but looks can be deceiving and they can't treat all that water to guarantee that it's perfectly clean. I know a few weeks ago it was closed because of a high level of bacteria in the water, so they do test it. Hope that helps
