Treatments are rushed and not worth your time. You're thrown in a room with multiple other patients separated by cubical dividers. Cupping technique is outdated. Additionally, I reached out to my Acupuncturist, Catherine Walters, to provide feedback on my experience and never got a response. I have been to multiple other acupuncturists (located in NY, PA, etc.) and this was by far the worst. My advice, stay clear.

Excellent place! Had a lovely relaxing treatment here today. Dr Adam has a lovely manner, he's very easy to talk to. Instantly made me feel comfortable. During and after the treatment I felt extremely relaxed. Highly recommended.

After months of chronic pain follow a traumatic injury and being passed along from specialist to specialist, I finally made the decision to pursue acupuncture services. Walking into TA in the New Year is one of the best personal decisions I have ever made. It was a turning point in recognizing that my body was out of balance, but that it had the ability to heal itself with acupuncture facilitating it. After dealing with clinical western medicine doctor's offices, TA is somewhere you will want to be and look forward to going. Not only is the space's aura peaceful and bright, but the staff could not be more mindful and kind. The co-founder, Nadia, runs the clinic more smoothly than any other office I have ever visited. To date, this clinic - not a specialist or my GP - has my most complete clinical history and has helped me to address the root cause of my symptoms, compared with western practitioners that want to mask symptoms through prescriptions. First and foremost, the acupuncturists actually listen to their patients and re-evaluate their situations during consults prior to every session. No western medicine doctor has ever provided me the space to talk about my symptoms and their evolution over time. The result is that with an acupuncturist you actually feel like you are working *with* someone on your medical concerns. Although I came to the clinic looking to address specific pain presentations, I ended up addressing the root of more persistent symptoms that I previously overlooked because my GP and GYN told me they were 'normal.' Crucially, the beauty of working with an acupuncturist is their ability to recognize and adapt to your evolving symptoms and make recommendations (such as through herbal consultations) to address them in a more systematic way. In other words, the practice takes a whole body approach to address root issues, rather than masking symptoms, for long-term health. In addition to all of the progress I have seen thanks to the help of the clinic, there are times the staff have gone above and beyond and for that I could not be more grateful.

Totally improved my quality of life. I have lived with chronic pain for many years - seen several different doctors and went through two rounds of physical therapy - and acupuncture has made the most striking difference in how I feel every day. My rheumatologist recommended that I try acupuncture, and though I was skeptical at first, it has completely altered how I feel every day.

Do you take insurance? How does insurance work at the clinic?

Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019
Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019

We are out-of-network with all insurance companies. However, many insurance policies, especially in the DC area, have very good out-of-network coverage for acupuncture. We would be happy to check your insurance policy to see if it covers acupuncture—just fill our our Benefits Verification form. It will take our team about two business days to check your policy. After we have the details of your policy we will send you an email explaining your coverage. When you come in for an acupuncture treatment you will pay at the time of service, and we will give you paperwork to submit to your company for reimbursement. A new patient acupuncture appointment is $125 and a return patient acupuncture appointment is $75. If you have out-of-network coverage, we will give you a detailed receipt/superbill at the end of your visit. This document has all the information needed to submit for reimbursement. https://www.dc-acupuncture.com/rates-insurance-forms/verify-your-insurance-benefits

Do you do dry needling?

Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019
Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019

Dry needling commonly refers to using long, wide gauge needles to create deep trigger point release in various muscles. We do not offer the kind of dry needling that is commonly practiced by physical therapists and other healthcare practitioners. The closest thing we offer is light trigger point needling with shorter, thin gauge needles in a few select areas of the body. If you’re looking for trigger point release work at our clinic, we recommend booking a Zheng Gu Tui Na (Chinese Medical Massage) session, which uses manual therapy as well as acupuncture to release trigger points and painful muscle knots. We offer a variety of treatments that effectively treat pain, including several styles of acupuncture, cupping, herbal medicine, and bodywork. Let us know if you have any questions about what service would be right for you!

When should I get acupuncture if I have an injury?

Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019
Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019

If you have an injury to a muscle or joint, it’s best to get treatment as soon as possible. There’s a lot we can do for you with both acupuncture and herbal medicine for early stage acute injuries. Acupuncture can be very helpful at any stage of the healing process, whether it’s acute or chronic.

What symptoms does acupuncture work for?

What’s a typical initial treatment plan?

Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019
Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019

Commonly, you will feel a reduction or elimination of your main symptom after your treatment. This will last approximately 1-7 days in our experience, and then begin to come back. That’s why at first we usually request that you come in either weekly or twice a week (depending on your situation) for your first 4 sessions. After that, we evaluate your progress and recommend a follow up treatment plan. Acupuncture is a bit like physical therapy—for chronic conditions you will need several treatments to gradually re-educate your body and nervous system into proper functioning. For acute conditions, things will often resolve more quickly than with chronic cases. After your initial treatment plan is completed, your acupuncturist will give you a follow-up treatment plan that is tailored to your level of progress.

Is acupuncture relaxing?

Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019
Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019

Yes, acupuncture can be very relaxing. Many of our patients (which include us when we get treatments!) come out of acupuncture feeling calm, relaxed, and even sleepy. It is also fairly common for patients to fall asleep while they are relaxing on the acupuncture table.

Should I eat before an appointment?

Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019
Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019

Yes. Ideally, you don’t want to be too hungry or too full. If you come into an appointment too hungry your acupuncturist may request that you eat something before beginning the treatment. This will prevent you from getting dizzy or light-headed. For those who are fasting we recommend booking appointments as close as you can to the last time that you ate. Ideally (with the exception of migraines that respond well to caffeine, and other similar conditions), you won’t have caffeine too soon before an appointment—this will help you relax more easily during your session, and have a more effective treatment. But if it happens—don’t worry, your treatment will turn out fine :)

What should I wear to my appointment?

Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019
Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019

There is no need to wear particular clothing when receiving acupuncture. We have towels and sheets available to cover up parts of the body if your acupuncturists needs access to a point that will require you to remove clothing. For bodywork sessions (i.e. Chinese Medical Massage) please bring shorts and a t-shirt to change into.

What forms do I need to fill out?

Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019
Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019

If you are a new patient, please fill out the New Patient Health History Form before you arrive for your appointment. Your acupuncturist needs this form before your appointment can begin—it’s best to fill it out beforehand or arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time to fill it out in the clinic. Also, please fill out the form to verify your acupuncture benefits, so we can let you know what your coverage is. https://www.dc-acupuncture.com/rates-insurance-forms/verify-your-insurance-benefits https://www.dc-acupuncture.com/rates-insurance-forms/new-patient-health-history-form

How long is an appointment?

Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019
Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019

Our acupuncture appointments are about an hour long. Please allocate at least one hour and 15 minutes in your schedule for planning purposes—it’s better to not have to rush off immediately to a next appointment.

What does it mean that you’re a “group practice?”

Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019
Transformational Acupuncture | Oct 7, 2019

Although there are 5 acupuncturists on our staff, we operate as a single team. You can see any acupuncturist at any time. We care coordinate weekly to assure that you’re getting high quality and good continuity of care. While the majority of people will see several practitioners during their course of treatment, many patients prefer to stay with one practitioner – that is completely fine.
