Nice little park, it's a shame there's only daytime pedestrian access to this section of beach. Most notable to this location are the facilities and the presence of a very old shipwreck directly across from the visitor center

A great place for a beach side trip. Depending on the season there's lots of migratory birds to be seen and some good hikes. Bring binoculars. Stop on the wooden bridge at the start for several minutes and wait for lots of turtles to come to the surface to greet you :)

Questions & Answers

I first heard about this place yesterday. I was told it is a good place to see sea turtles hatch during the early warm months. Has anyone else heard of this?

Yep! My Aunt watched them last year. The nest are usually known and marked off to keep people away until they are ready to hatch. You might be able to look at in local paper or ask the museum experts about how to crowd around a nest and wait for them to come out of the sand.

Where did Pea island get its name from

Jimmy Pea | Oct 4, 2018
M Hall | Oct 4, 2018

Because of the overabundance of Dune Peas on the island. They are a plentiful food source for the greater snow geese that migrate and stay there over winter.
