So interesting and what a fascinating history!! The guys that were part of the Life-Saving Service were heros and just amazing. You need to visit the station.... its just amazing what those guys had to do and did!!!

Worth a trip or a stop, what a nicely preserved piece if Outerbanks history! Self guided tour, but staff is knowledgeable and helpful for questions and conversations.

We've been twice. The first time we didn't know about the lifeboat drill at 2:00 on Thursdays so we went a second time when friends were visiting. Highly recommend the reenactment.

Excellent history & information given by the speaker (Capt. Chuck)! We loved the rescue reenactment & explanation of all the equipment they used to use. Thank you to all!!

Hi June, thanks for reaching out to us. Historically we have tried being open on the weekends but have found the great majority of visitors arrive/depart on Saturday or Sunday to the Island, resulting in very low weekend visitation. Since we are a non-profit we must allocate our funds and volunteer time carefully to best meet our guest needs. Sorry if you were not able to visit on a weekend and we hope you can come by during the week in the future.
We were having the drill every Thursday from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Since Hatteras Island is pretty much booked through the end of October we will be holding the drill every other Thursday at 2 pm beginning next week September 17th and then October 1st, October 15th.....etc.
I would assume because you can see similar things driving through West Virginia and Virginia on the way to the OBX.
Only service dogs are allowed to be led on a leash throughout our site. We do, however, allow friendly dogs up on our 1911 porch to wait with a family member while others are touring. It can get quite warm in your vehicle so we do have a heart!
Not sure, you should be able to call the station and find out. Someone is there now.
