The category of fire extinguisher is indicated by a small colored band: red for water, white and red for water spray, cream for foam, blue for dry powder, yellow for wet chemical, green for clean agent, and black for CO2 extinguishers.

There are a few: Combustible solids, such as wood, paper, and cloth, are classified as Class A fires. Flammable liquids, such as gasoline, diesel, and kerosene, trigger Class B fires. Flammable gases, such as LPG, CNG, PNG, and others, trigger Class C fires. Metal fires are classified as Class D fires. Electrically started fires, such as short-circuits, are classified as Class E fires. Cooking oil fires are classified as Class F fires.

Depending on the type of fire, a fire extinguisher may contain everything from water to foam, powder, or gas as an extinguishing agent. Extinguishers can be classified into two types: stored pressure and spot pressure.In stored pressure variant, either the extinguishing agent itself is kept in compressed form or compressed air/dry nitrogen is used to create pressure for instant propulsion. Where as in spot pressure variant, propulsion takes place as a result of chemical reaction.
