My visit to the tax office was smooth and stressless.

Recently saw a Video where a Gentleman had visited the Administration Building and was doing a great job showing the politeness of most of the employees with the exception of the Lady who said he couldn't record and then the man with the accent was trying to give Rogue Nation an attitude. Also, that the Security Guards need to be retrained. This is A "Public" Building. No one and especially a camera makes these employees look bad. They do it to themselves. As a South Carolina citizen, I have always looked at Charleston as our most beautiful city but it seems we have a little ugly hidden in our Charleston County Employees. Please don't make South Carolina and especially the beautiful city of Charleston look bad. Learn the Laws about the 1st Amendment. That photography is legal in public places and public buildings Except In Restricted Areas. And most of these Auditors know these Laws. Policies and Rules Do Not Override Laws. Please do not make this beautiful Historic City and our Wonderful State look bad. Thank you.

If you have a question "outside of the box" their strategy is to pass you off to another department... who then passes you off to another department... then another... then to Airbnb who says you need to talk to your Charleston government... etc. etc. creating a tautological scavenger hunt of information that seemingly doesn't exist. Most employees who answer the phone at county of Charleston are audibly bothered by my questions. Most of my questions are about the Airbnb taxes collected by Charleston. Taxes collected by a government entity is how the government entity stays funded. In short, taxes pay these employees' salaries. These employees should not only understand this fully, but also take the time to learn about how the Airbnb taxing system relationship with Charleston works. This would empower them to better explain such concepts to business owners who do this only once a year or once a month vs. everyday because it is their job. Charleston is receiving accommodation taxes from Airbnb, but not being forthright about the breakdown/exact figures received on behalf of each host/home owner. No one wants to double pay and hope for a refund from the government. I want to understand so I may pay, yet they cannot explain their process of collecting money from Airbnb. This directly factors into my numbers to renew my business license, pay income taxes, properly categorize expenses, etc. I cannot get a straight answer from anyone. There are LONG pauses after I ask a question. The answer is something they have already told me which didn't make sense- hence my follow up question. Most employees I eventually get on the phone are very snarky and you can tell they absolutely hate their jobs, their lives, everything. If you have gotten through to a person once, do not expect them to answer your calls thereafter. It makes my stomach churn knowing they are supposed to work to help taxpayers like myself figure out how to PAY THEM MONEY TO OPERATE A BUSINESS- not frustrate us to the point of giving up.

Best of luck in all you do for the City. And in getting great free publicity by enacting a ban on horse carriages and instead getting electric horseless ones!! Look up the new models and even follow ups on the retired horses would be additional PR! Thank you very much.

With the new law veterans who are service connected can access the base and shop at the exchange using their VA health enrollment card starting Januay 1, 2020. As a veteran who is 100% Permanent and Total disabled you may make an appointment at your local VA office (yes, that includes this office) for a verification letter that you can take to the ID office for base privileges.
Its not likely there are any appointments available for Monday. You can call the office Monday morning to see if there are any appointments available. 843-974-6360.
