Yes, drain pipes do dry out and get real rough. Will it clear up with use? Maybe. Is there anything you can really do about it? Not after the fact. Prevention is best here – try to run some water through infrequently used drains every so often to keep this from happening.

To get a snake in the drain you take off the overflow plate. That’s the round thing on the tub wall with two screws. When you pull it out – two sections of the stopper mechanism will come with it. It’s hinged so it will bend through the hole. Chances are that hair caught on the end of this mechanism is clogging the drain – you might not even need to snake it. By the way – a snake will not go through the drain hole at the bottom of the tub.

Is the top of the toilet flange even (or close to even) with the finished floor? If it is too low – then use two wax rings. One regular wax ring on the bottom and one (or more) with the plastic horn insert on top. I have seen leaks like you describe if the glued flange is not really glued in all the way. Take a look at that – if your floor and flange is flush. Sometimes you need to shim the toilet if the floor is uneven or the flange is to high.

Could be a loose washer. The pressure holds it down when no other faucet is running water and the lower pressure lets it rise up a bit when other water is used.

Gas hot water heaters have to be at least 18″ off the floor because combustible fumes sink, and to provide adequate air intake.

Plumbers must demonstrate their competence as installers of plumbing systems to an official executing board prior to being issued a license. A plumbing code which is technically perfect is valueless if its provisions are not observed and enforced. The issuance of a license by a community specifies that the holder is qualified both theoretically and practically and that their technical knowledge is sufficient to maintain the standards of the code. Is licensing intended to prevent anyone but a plumber from doing sanitation work? NO… Licensing prohibits the irresponsible, incapable person from endangering the health of your family, neighbors, and community. Any person may do the work who has sufficient knowledge to do it in a safe manner, so long as the Rules and Regulations of the plumbing and sanitation code are observed. However, those wishing to do such work must demonstrate their ability by taking out a license and passing an examination.

There are a couple of ways to go. That little rectangular box is a cleanout plug. It’s brass. If you can unscrew it great – if not cut off the square with a Sawzall and you will find that it’s hollow. Then cut from the center out to the threads in pie sections. Peel the plug out of the female threads. If you’re lucky it will be 3″. Screw in a 3″ male adapter and kick on out… However it may be 3 1/2″ which is no longer made. Use a 5″ by 3″ Fernco bell with the 5″ over the hub of the cleanout. Bush down with a 3″; by 2″bush in the 3″ end of the Fernco and you’re home again.

It is illegal (and not a very environmentally or plumbing friendly practice) to connect any rain or ground water to the sewer or a septic tank. IF, however, you do hookup – at the very least put a trap in the line to keep sewer gas out of the house.

It is a JOB. A couple of suggestions… while you’re at it replace the waste and overflow and if possible the tub/shower faucet. Second, you can get tub surrounds in two pieces that will fit through doors and three (I like the Sterling brand surrounds), American Standard makes an Americast tub that has the properties of a cast iron – but without the weight. I personally prefer Kohler cast iron over Americast as I think it’s more durable. By the way, you can break out the old cast tub with a sledge hammer and cut up a metal tub with a Sawzall.

In many professionals’ opinion, copper rules in most situations (unless you have low pH or aggressive water)! Over time, the plastic can sometimes sag and possibly get brittle. If it needs to be repaired or altered in any way, the pipe will have to be glued and you will have no water until it dries. Copper – you can solder, turn it on, test it and know that all is well. Any plastic to metal connection is weak, such as where the water heater connection is made. Additionally, mice and rats love many plastics. They chew on it to keep their teeth from growing through their lower jaw.

If the run from the house to the street is short (under 60 feet) I’d use Type L soft copper. It is less likely to break and it has no fittings in the ground except at each end of the pipe. I’d also put foam insulation around the copper run. For longer runs my next choice would be schedule 40 PVC pipe. Not a bad choice at all. I would not use flexible plastic – that is black poly pipe. It comes in a roll. It is too soft. Hard surfaces (rocks) rub holes in it and where ever there is a transition to another type of pipe or an elbow it will leak there – because of the hard adapter, radiator clamps, and the soft pipe. These connectors will break over time. I repair them weekly. Schedule 40 PVC or copper is the best way to go with water mains.

Most likely you have galvanized pipes that have rusted. There is no way to clean rust out of old galvanized pipes. Most dishwashers have a screen where the water connects to the machine. You access it through the lower front panel. Another solution would be to put a filter on just the hot water pipe to the dishwasher. If you replace the pipe – use copper – and connect to the old galvanized with a dialectic union.

This may be the most important question of all you have to answer. You might turn a $300 repair into a $1000 repair if something goes wrong and you have to start the project over again. Be prepared to pay big time in case things don’t go according to plan.

Even if you have just about everything you need to do the repairs to your plumbing, you will have to decide if you have the know-how to perform what needs to be done. Many plumbing jobs are very specialized. Changing out a toilet, fixing a leaking pipe or installing a new water heater requires specialized knowledge. Are you up to the task?

There is a certain amount of skill required to be able to do some, or even most, of the things required to repair your plumbing. Taking things apart, fixing them and putting them back together is not something most people generally do. The amount of skill required to do your plumbing job might be beyond your reach.

The plumber goes around fixing people’s plumbing issues full-time. That’s his job. You probably have a full-time job, so just when are you going to get around to fixing the issue with your plumbing? If it’s an emergency you will have to take time off from work. Otherwise you will have to try to work on your issue after work or on the weekend. Can your problem wait so you can fix the issue in your “free” time?

When a plumber comes to your home to do a job they normally have most of the items needed to do your job in their work truck. Smaller pipes and fittings, faucets, valves and other common plumbing materials are carried by plumbers. You will probably have to run to the home improvement store to get all you need to do the job. This will take both time and money.

While many of the tools a plumber uses are ordinary and common, there are several types of augers and plungers that are not. If you have to go out and buy any tools this may make the cost of your do-it-yourself job more than calling a plumber.

A hose clamp works the same way as a pipe clamp but it is used on smaller leaks. Again, wrap the leak with a rubber pad and screw on a hose clamp, or even several, over the rubber pad.

There are several kinds of tape that can be wrapped around a small leak. Duct tape and electrical tape can be used. Take care to cover the entire leak. Also, make sure the tape makes good contact with the pipe so no pockets form where water can gather. This might cause the tape to lose grip.

Some considerations… Before you attempt to fix any plumbing leak yourself there are a few things you might want to keep in mind. Knowing these could save you from a plumbing disaster. • Know where the main cutoff valve for the water is to your home. If something goes terribly wrong you will at least be able to cut the water off until help arrives. • There are devices you can hook up to your plumbing system that alert you when larger amounts of water are being used. These will even cut the water off for you if very big leaks occur. • You can put individual cutoff valves around your home to isolate some areas. In this way you don’t have to turn off the water to the entire home. • You will have to judge the size of the leak. If it’s too large just call a plumber.

If one of the larger pipes in your home is clogged this might be a bigger issue. A plunger and the plumber’s snake can be tried but the clog might be more than these can handle. Drano is a real issue here also. The amount of substance you have to pour in your system to unclog the drain might damage your pipes. You might be forced to call a plumber.

Your bathtub will probably have the same issue as the bathroom sink, hair. Pull off the grate that covers the drain and try the same things as you would with a bathroom sink. This will hopefully work and keep your bathroom plumbing in Chico working efficiently.

Kitchen sinks are usually stopped up by grease that has cooled and expanded in your pipes. That grease then catches other particles and adds to the problem. If not, you can try a plumber’s snake but be warned this will be a very messy job.

Step 3: Try to Unclog the Toilet and Clean Up • Place the cup of a toilet plunger at the center of the hole in the toilet bowl. Exert slow pressure at first; then gradually increase the pace and pressure of your movements until the clog is dislodged and the toilet flushes freely. • Clean up large amounts of water with a wet/dry vacuum. Old towels should suffice for smaller spills. Ensure that you dry out smaller spills. Ensure that you dry out any soaked areas – and disinfect them with bleach – so that you don’t develop a mold problem.

Step 2: Investigate the Scope of the Plumbing Problem • Test the other plumbing fixtures in the bathroom to see if they are working as they should. • Check the other toilets in your home to see if they flush properly. A toilet can overflow for several reasons, including: a problematic septic field (if your home is on a septic system); a blocked trap, an S-shaped device located between the bowl and the drain line which is supposed to keep the drain from clogging in the first place; a clog in the pipes inside your home; a clog in the pipes leading outside your home, including the main sewer line, which can be disrupted by the root systems of trees; or a low-flow toilet, which generally means older models.
