Greenville Chamber of Commerce

I've been trying to visit all 88 Greenville landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places list, which the Chamber of Commerce building is on. Like many on the list, they even display their bronze marker at the entrance. The building stands proud in a bustling area on Main Street that is more-or-less used as a pedestrian crossing. I was surprised to find the "iron butterflies" going up the left side of the of the building at the doorway. Are they symbolism for something or are they just a neat little architectural addition?
