The facility is not what it was 15 years ago. The house physician is incompetent and they no longer have the amazing Volunteer Services.

I had the most wonderful care at Mary Manning Walsh at 72nd street and York Avenue. I had fractured my pelvis and was in the facility for a month. The incredible doctors and nurses and staff brought me back to being able to walk (with a cane) and were simply superb. I will be forever grateful to this great rehab center.

I would never go back. I had read good reviews and was hopeful. But it was an unpleasant experience. I was stuck there for weeks. The food was OK. The physical therapy was sufficient. The staff was hostile and acted like they were doing us a favor. On arrival I asked for a glass of water and was given hot water. When I asked for cold the attendant said, oh no, another complainer. But the worst, which may seem trivial was the “beauty “salon. I went three times as I needed my hair washed. The first time the hairdresser dried it with curling tongs and said it was easier for her. The second one wouldn’t let any of us seen ourselves in the mirror. When I asked why she said that patients only want alterations if they see themselves. The last one said to me after she had finished, that I looked more beautiful than her, and all the men would want me. I decided she meant well and I should educate her. I told her she was young and pretty and I was over 70 and had lost a lot of weight and I knew I wasn’t beautiful. I told her it was hurtful even though she meant well, as it reminded me of when I was young and beautiful. But there was no stopping her. She kept it up till I was in tears. Look she said, wheeling me to the mirror and putting her face next to her, see how beautiful you are. I was reminded of that awful scene in The Elephant Man movie. This might seem a small thing but it’s bad enough being old and sick. The facility was constantly running out of gowns - this was pre-Covid. The “entertainment was aimed at the over 90’s. If you aren’t Catholic the TV masses might annoy you. Hope this helps.
