Big Meadows was full, so we tried this camp ground. They had plenty sites available on first come first serve basis. Camp sites were clean, plenty of parking space and woods were denser than big Meadows. Bathrooms were OK, could have been better. Had a good time

A wonderful campground with great spots. We stayed two nights and saw lots of deer wandering through. The ranger at the gate was phenomenal and we would stay again. Spaces are mostly flat and cell service is minimal. Perfect for a Shenandoah stay. I only wish I could have stayed up late enough to see the stars!

Lots of sites available for first come first serve. There are also sites you can reserve online. Definitely a good distance between each sites. Bathrooms are maintained and cleaned often. Bear lockers are available on some sites, if not you will need to store all scented items and food in your car. For dish cleaning, you must wash them at your site and dump the fluid at sink by the restroom. Barely any service (Verizon & T-Mobile) here which is a good thing, chance to disconnect for the weekend. This is our second time here and it was as awesome as the first time. Highly recommend! lots of trees here for shades compared to Big Meadows. Dog friendly!

I wasn't overly impressed with this camp. The rangers were amazing nice. Our site was unlevel and in the open. It was a very clean campground though. My biggest issues was to pay $30 a night for zero hookups or showers on top of having to pay to get on Skyline drive. Guess you are paying for the view.

$30/night
You don't have to, but you should, just to make sure you have a spot. recreation.gov half price camping for seniors with a pass
They open the office at 7am! MOST WEEKDAYS (Monday-thursday) there isn't a big rush and USUALLY plenty of sites available. Friday and Saturday are a LONG shot for getting a spo, specially when the leaves are changing. If you are coming Friday or Saturday, you will want to be there NLT 7. Check out for people leaving is noon. And every day is 1st come 1st serve. I just spent 2 weeks there and it was full EVERY Friday and Saturday but VERY MUCH near empty Sunday-thursday
They do have a couple of spots higher up on the map that can accommodate groups, but those you must reserve. If you're going for first come first serve.. get there by noon to scout. You may have to drive around once to find big enough spots. There are a few that are only big enough for a small tent.

Please visit www.recreation.gov and search for Mathews Arm Campground. Generally the link is https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232432 Go to this link and reserve your camping spot online. You can also get your all permits from this government website. We updated the website on google maps on Mathews arm Campground.
It's $15 per night, but you'll also have to pay to get on Skyline Drive. That's $30 and good for seven days.
The camground is 24/7. However the main entrance to the national forest land and Skyline drive closes for winter I believe at the end of November. Also camping is a fee of 15$ nightly with a checkout time of 12pm the next day. Also the main gate to enter Skyline drive and the national forest is 30$ per car. I pay the annual fee of 55$ good for admission to national park for an entire year. If you enter park after 8pm. There is no rangers present to collect entrance fee. The sign says "pay as you leave." You can also enter campground later in the evening after the ranger office is closed and pay for your campsite in a drop box.
