— Edited 8/30/2022 (copied from Facebook):— From 2 stars to 1 star Bike room was broken into and management hasn’t contacted anyone about it yet and is extremely dodgy with direct questions being asked (they’ve had over 2 days since the incident). Can’t post on the neighborhood feed to let other people know because it’s regulated by management. I filed a police report and the police officer told me that ~10 bike racks were removed from the ground and bikes stolen. There are apparently no cameras there (according to police): concern #1. Concern #2: how can I feel safe in a place where no one noticed the theft of at least 10 bikes from a “secure” room? Concern #3: how can I feel like I am informed and able to act on threats to my safety when the management has to go through a PR team (that takes several days) before notifying us of said potential threats? — End edit — Basic amenities (like trash and internet) are lacking. We work from home and the internet goes out every so often, causing us to drop work calls. There is no other option here than to go with spectrum, even though there is fiber internet in the area (like across the street at Cortland Bull City). Another grievance we have is with the trash/recycling. There is a trash chute which works for every day use, and a cardboard box bin outside, but the valet service is the only option for recycling. We pay $30/month to have valet trash pick up our trash (only) 5 days a week, but can only put out one bag at a time. This seems absurd , especially when there is no other option other than the valet service to use for general recycling. Love the area and the people who work here (at least who we’ve interacted with) have been great, but the fact that we can’t choose an internet provider and get overcharged for sub-par services means we’ll probably be moving out.

Edit: August 2022: changed my review from 3 to 4 stars. Move out process was smooth, a package delivery service was implemented to combat package theft, and I was wrong about the security cameras. There were more than I previously noticed. Office staff are pleasant and overall issues were always dealt with in a timely manner. I would recommend whetstone to people looking to live downtown An honest review since others seem almost advertise-y. I've lived at whetstone for 10 months: Since this was/is one of the cheaper options downtown now, I'd say overall I think it has been decent value for money in my case. I was able to rent a 2 bedroom for ~$1350/month with everything included, but of course in 2022 rent will go up at least 15%, so I'm out of here. Package theft was an issue in 2021 but these issues were addressed with a 3rd party package delivery service. I also heard of issues with car and bike theft. Management assured they had security in the parking garages, but I never saw them. Of course there's only security cameras in the front entrance and near the vending machine. Doesn't exactly show that this place values security. Office staff are friendly and seem to do a good job with what they can work with. They try to host socials every now and again but often they're at difficult times for people with full time day jobs, and there are virtually none on the weekends. Amenities are meh. The gym is small and the pool could be cleaner, but overall the pool and the grills are convenient in the warmer weather. No issues with overcharges or management overall. I plan to update the review when I move out to review how that process goes.

I lived in Whetstone for almost two years in a 2bd/2ba. I liked my apartment and really enjoyed the complex amenities. The location is ideal: walking distance to all of downtown Durham, but tucked over in a spot that is not noisy or highly trafficked. I never had trouble finding a space in the parking deck and the community itself is very quiet. The few times I submitted maintenance requests they were handled efficiently and the office staff were always friendly and helpful. I moved there in 2020 and got in on a decent rate, but with the rapid influx of tech companies and the crazy rental/housing market in Durham, I've been priced out. But if it's in your price range, it's a lovely place to live.

Whetstone has been my home for almost 2 years and I have loved every minute! The building and amenities are so nice, but the best part is the staff! Ben, Ana, Chris, and everyone else are so kind, accommodating, and always go far and above any expectations for us residents. They run giveaways, host monthly resident socials, and often (including today) offer breakfast from places like Chick-fil-A for us. Whetstone is a lovely place to call home!

You just need to log into the resident portal, whetstone.activebuilding. That’s how you place maintenance requests. Or if it is an urgent matter just call the Whetstone phone number and they have 24 hour maintenance. Also I can almost guarantee it isn’t sewer water, it’s the garbage disposal/dishwasher connection backing up, a common issue not just at Whetstone but with any linked pipe system.
How much is the rent
