Every time I’ve dealt with Louisiana pension plan employees they have been very friendly, knowledgeable, and no question too stupid. Very patient. I knew nothing. I called to see when I could start to receive the pension because I’d forgotten the age. It’s been since retirement in 2014 so had call ask. Very happy help me and I was thinking it was 62 years of age but maybe 63, so better ask. It was 60!!! Yay! That’s 8 months away for me. Since had over 10 years service it was 60. Awesome since been in disability with no check or help at all. All Medicare premiums, copays, procedures, hospitals, ER trips, ambulance, meds, oxygen all out of pocket. The med alert system and dentures aren’t covered at all. So yes need my retirement so I appreciate their patience in dealing with me! Hopefully the info I’ve posted my Gelo another that has questions also. And making my day last week. Thank you.

DEALING WITH LASERS HAS BEEN A REAL PAIN. NO ONE CAN GIVE A TRUE ANSWER TO MY QUESTIONS, UNTIL I TALKED TO THE NICEST LADY THAT DOESNT SIT ON HER BUTT ALL DAY. WISH I REMEMBERED HER NAME BECAUSE THE REST OFTHE STAFF NEEDS TO TAKE A LESSON FROM HER ON KINDNESS AND DOING THEIR JOB. THE ONLY REASON I GAVE 3 STARS WAS BECAUSE OF HER HELPFULNESS.

Hi, At the end of the DROP period can you get your funds without being penalized if you are under 60 years old?

Felicia Brown | Sep 27, 2021
Louisiana State Employees' Retirement System | Sep 27, 2021

Hi Felicia! All lump-sum withdrawals are subject to a 20% Federal tax to help cover your income tax liability, as required by the IRS. If you are in a low tax bracket, you could be due a refund when you file your taxes. If you are in a high tax bracket, you could owe more at tax time. In addition to this 20% Federal tax, there may be an additional 10% early withdrawal penalty if you withdraw funds before the age of 59 ½. There are exemptions to this 10% early withdrawal penalty. They include: 1. If you retire in the year you turn 55 or older, you will not be subject to the 10% early withdrawal penalty. 2. If you’re a qualified public safety employee in a governmental plan and you separate from state service the year you reach age 50 or later you are exempt from the 10% early withdrawal penalty. This includes correctional officers and other agents with arrest power, such as wildlife agents, bridge police, public safety officers, and peace officers.

Who is your agent for service of process?

can a person retire from the State and draw their LASERS benefits and be re-employed at LSU without a reduction in their LASER benefit

Isabel Loret | Sep 28, 2018
Louisiana State Employees' Retirement System | Sep 28, 2018

The answer is dependent upon which retirement system covers the new position. If it is covered by LASERS, the Rehired Retiree chapter of the Member’s Guide to Retirement (found on the website) covers all questions. If not covered by LASERS, then you would have to ask the covering system about their options.
