Oh Palmetto Trail. It has bested me on all 3 attempts. The first try, i got caught in a storm. It wasn't the rain that turned me around, it was the mosquitoes. Even after dowsing myself in deet. Made it about a mile and a half in before turing around. Lots of amazing mushrooms tho ! The second attempt, an extremely aggressive flying bug was attacking my face and WOULD NOT F OFF. That dang bug was the reason i turned around. I know, i know. The 3rd time, that same bug or type of bug was all up in my face the second i stepped out of my car and followed me a decent mile before i had enough. Ultimately it was the spider webs that annoyed me enough to bail, once again. Try walking at a brisk pace just to get face slapped with invisible thick webs housing massive spiders every 10 steps. Its 7 miles north until you reach the other access, 14 miles total to make it back (and thats not even the full Palmetto Trail, this is just a little section). I havent been able to make it 2 miles in because i am too squeamish with bugs, and i hike alone. It is such a beautiful trial from what ive seen and i am dying to finish the hike, but might have to wait until fall or winter.

I was born and raised in Charleston but sad to say this was my first time on the Awendaw trail. Definitely not the last as it was a PERFECT experience! Thank you in advance to those that wrote reviews as being prepared was why it was so perfect. July in Charleston w our rains can bring brutal mosquitoes so BE prepared! We wore short sleeved shirts but quickly added a thin, breathable layer. Sunscreen and bug spray is a must. Surprisingly though, the majority of the trail is magically shaded and we had a breeze in some spots. Neither of us walked away w one bite! I am training for the JMT trail and have an adventurous friend so we both wore Oboz boots and Darn Tough socks, perfect for the trail. The biggest hurdle was avoiding the Banana Spider webs (kudos to their insane efforts and resultsπ). Use the benches to rest and have a high protein snack. We had liter hydration packs but definitely bring a small daypack w plenty of water. The weather held. The scenery was magical. In 9 miles we only saw people at Buckhall landing (the fishing dock, picnic benches, and rest rooms are a plus!) and a few residents on Rosa road. The only glitch was there was zero signage after crossing 17 so we didnβt pick up the last loop. 9 miles in total though was perfect and lunch at Seweeβs classic restaurant rewarded us with a well rewarded meal. Love the staff there. Fantastic service, laughs and local wisdom:-) Absolutely priceless to share this Lowcountry treasure. Thank you to the the Palmetto Corp, volunteers and sponsors. After the JMT, my goal is to get that Palmetto patch and to support your efforts in every way we can πͺπΌπβΊοΈβ€οΈ

Its a down and back trail, go as far as you're comfortable and then turn back
This passage is slightly over 7 miles. The whole Palmetto trail goes across the entire state and is 350 miles. There are various places to park for longer or shorter hikes. A map is available here: https://palmettoconservation.org/passage/awendaw-passage/
It is a beautiful place to fish. No facilities, but there is a big ramp down to the water. A kayak and canoe slide is built onto the ramp. A floating dock on the water.
The boardwalks can be very slippery when wet. Edisto Beach State Park has the best trails for a wheelchair
