You can either go online to the SCDMV website and surrender the plate. They will send you a notification in the mail it was surrendered and you keep the plate or they say "destroy" it. Or you can go to the DMV and personally turn it in to them. I did the online one, it took like 5 min. and done. I hope this helps!!

I just did exactly that. They wanted my title. I don't even think they wanted to see proof of insurance, but I had that form, so maybe they looked at it. However, before you get your license plate, you need to go to the county's tax assessor office and pay property taxes on your vehicle. I believe they wanted to see the title. Then you take your receipt from the assessor's office to the DMV and complete the application for a South Carolina title and license plate. You can do this at the same time you get your driver's license. Just make sure you've gone to the tax assessor's office first. Also, you can make an appointment for the DMV online, but the appointments are several days out. You can show up as a walk-in, and they will take your phone number, and text you when they are ready for you. I've done that a couple of times, and it was about a 2-hour wait each time. Their estimates of the wait were pretty accurate, but you have to stick close by. You only have a few minutes.

You can refer to the SC DMV website for the paperwork required for title transfers, the forms required (which you can prefill and save time) and book your appy online.
