Nice hike. Wildflowers were amazing. We didn't realize there was a race in the canyon starting at about the same time we were arriving. Traffic and parking were a beast because of that, but we still loved the hike.

Great trail but strenuous for an inexperienced person. The lake is a beautiful large manmade lake. It's a short trail so if you don't overdo it I think about anyone could do it. Take plenty of breaks and go slow. If there's snow on I'd recommend snow shoes. The snow gets really loose close to the lake. Some sort of cleat or traction device and hiking poles is absolutely necessary if snow is on. During the winter the lake is completely frozen over. On may 14 there was packed most of the way with loose snow near the lake. The lake was almost completely frozen over with a few areas beginning to thaw. Prairie dogs were running around all over the place.

Beautiful trail. It is quite a killer going straight up the face of Brighton resort. We took a couple of breaks to her up there but once we got up near Lake Mary in was a lot less strenuous and just beautiful.

My wife mentioned she wanted to go hike this trail. So, we drove up yesterday with our daughter. It has been few years since we have been up Big Cottonwood Canyon. I had forgotten how beautiful it is up there. The trail is well marked and there were others making the hike. It isn't technically difficult, however, it is steep. Being a few years beyond fifty, it was important to keep a healthy pace, stay hydrated and make sure we had some protein bars. The views were majestic and the landscape was serine. While there were other at the lakes we visited, it did not seem crowded in any way. We did see a moose who was quite content grazing near a water source. It was well worth the hike up. It's amazing there is such rugged and beautiful places so close to such a large metropolitan area. Enjoy!

No dogs in big or little cottonwood canyons, they are water shed. City creek and mill creek allow dogs and are close to the valley.
