Small game season is aug 15-feb 28 in 2021. Check the regs about what type of weapon is legal to carry for this season.
Yes, you can scout ahead of deer season. Just be aware there are other hunting seasons besides deer here. Your scouting may coincide with another species hunting season like small game, dove, or turkey. Be mindful to not disrupt live hunts with scouting, and be safe
