Over the last few years that I’ve had the pleasure of knowing the staff at HSEC, they’ve experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Working in animal care is not easy, physically or emotionally. Emergencies don’t ever happen on someone’s schedule. From emergency visits to the vet to packing up the car at a moment’s notice to pull red-listed animals at a shelter in Eastern NC, this group of incredible staff and volunteers are constantly fighting for the rights of animals in their community. What the public sees - and the misconceptions that they have about the true work that goes into animal care - only makes the work harder. I’m so thankful that our community has HSEC as a resource, advocate, and refuge for animals in need.

We walked in to adopt a kitten because we love to rescue animals and they wouldn’t give us the time of day and the workers were very disrespectful and rude. Every animal in there needs to be rescued from them ASAP. Not a good place for those animals. I feel bad for those animals trying to give them forever home and they refused to let us even see the animals. I wonder how they treat them if we can’t even see them. We also emailed and called with no response and we are 3 hours away so drove to come see them and that’s how they treat us. I’m very disappointed in this “rescue” facility.

If it wasn't for u guys, I wouldn't have been reunited with my dog, Hunter. He has been with me his entire life. When he went missing, I was heartbroken. I arrived to pick him up & before he saw me I could tell he was heartbroken too... but as soon as he saw me his eyes lit up. He ran to me and howled & was the happiest I have ever seen him! He spends his days with me as I work, just as he always has. Thank you for all that you do!!!

I believe it is still by appointment. You can view the animals up for adoption on their website. If you are interested in specific ones, you have to call and tell them which animal(s) you are interested in and make an appointment.
Hey Lydia, We love volunteers coming to hangout with the dogs! It is free! You can sign up to be a volunteer with us on our website. We would LOVE to have you come and walk dogs and love on them. Look forward to meeting you! HSEC Staff
How old is he. And are you still looking for a home for your pet.

Hi Margo, Sadly we are not taking owner surrenders unless they were previously HSEC animals at the moment. There is a facebook group called Eastern NC Pets 2.0 where you can post her as well. Adoptapet.com also has a spot where owners can post their rehoming dogs.
If you go to their website and fill out a foster application (and get approved), they will email you weekly lists of fosters needed!
They come neutered before you adopt
