Over the last few years that I’ve had the pleasure of knowing the staff at HSEC, they’ve experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Working in animal care is not easy, physically or emotionally. Emergencies don’t ever happen on someone’s schedule. From emergency visits to the vet to packing up the car at a moment’s notice to pull red-listed animals at a shelter in Eastern NC, this group of incredible staff and volunteers are constantly fighting for the rights of animals in their community. What the public sees - and the misconceptions that they have about the true work that goes into animal care - only makes the work harder. I’m so thankful that our community has HSEC as a resource, advocate, and refuge for animals in need.

We walked in to adopt a kitten because we love to rescue animals and they wouldn’t give us the time of day and the workers were very disrespectful and rude. Every animal in there needs to be rescued from them ASAP. Not a good place for those animals. I feel bad for those animals trying to give them forever home and they refused to let us even see the animals. I wonder how they treat them if we can’t even see them. We also emailed and called with no response and we are 3 hours away so drove to come see them and that’s how they treat us. I’m very disappointed in this “rescue” facility.

If it wasn't for u guys, I wouldn't have been reunited with my dog, Hunter. He has been with me his entire life. When he went missing, I was heartbroken. I arrived to pick him up & before he saw me I could tell he was heartbroken too... but as soon as he saw me his eyes lit up. He ran to me and howled & was the happiest I have ever seen him! He spends his days with me as I work, just as he always has. Thank you for all that you do!!!

Are we able to walk in just to see the animals or do we have to make an appointment? I know the adoption center requires appointments but if we are just looking?

Juliana McKee | Jun 25, 2022
Melissa Chandler | Jun 25, 2022

I believe it is still by appointment. You can view the animals up for adoption on their website. If you are interested in specific ones, you have to call and tell them which animal(s) you are interested in and make an appointment.

Questions like this should be asked over the phone to a rep from the humane society. This cannot be answered on a public "forum".

I have a 2 year old pit. She has all shots and spayed. I have to move and I may not be able to take her with me. It's breaking my heart, but I need somewhere for her to go.

Margo Larue | Jul 25, 2022
Humane Society of Eastern Carolina | Jul 25, 2022

Hi Margo, Sadly we are not taking owner surrenders unless they were previously HSEC animals at the moment. There is a facebook group called Eastern NC Pets 2.0 where you can post her as well. Adoptapet.com also has a spot where owners can post their rehoming dogs.
