Ippudo Berkeley opened last year to ridiculous lines wrapped around the block. I would drive by and think to myself, "gosh it must be incredibly good food if these lines are so long!" I waited a few months and then I went in to get a bowl of their famous ramen. No wait, great space, but sorry to say that the ramen was just OK. I really wanted the experience to be different but I've had better ramen to be honest. Obviously, it IS good ramen otherwise it wouldn't be quite so popular, but I didn't understand from the taste of it what the big fuss was about that caused multi-hour waits when they launched. That said, the waitstaff was kind and very nice, and some of the other menu items were good - the fried chicken was delicious and the pork buns were addictive, but again I just don't understand why Ippudo is so world-famous if the ramen is just average. So, while I can't give it five stars for the wait times and hype, if you want a good solid bowl of ramen and have time to kill in the wait lines, check them out!
